The build up of nitrates in the water is one of the first signs of dropping water quality. While nitrate isnt as immediately dangerous to fish as ammonia and nitrite high nitrate levels are associated with general poor health. High nitrate levels will also cause rapid and often uncontrollable algae growth. Weekly testing of nitrate levels is recommended.
